Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad was established in the year 1965 as the Nagarjuna Sagar Engineering College and rechristened as a university in 1972 by The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Act 1972 by combining colleges in Kakinada and Anantapur.

In 2008, JNTU was split into 4 universities namely JNTU Hyderabad, JNTU Kakinada, JNTU Anantapur and Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU).
